Minneapolis, Minnesota — On Sunday, Boston defeated the Twins 9-2 to snap Minnesota’s 12-game winning streak, highlighted by a home run by Ceddanne Rafaela, the team’s first in seven games. Rafael Devers also added another.
Boston snapped a three-game losing streak in which it scored just four runs thanks to two-run doubles from Dominic Smith and Vaughn Grissom.
Trevor Larnach had an RBI single, while Ryan Jeffers hit a home run for Minnesota. The Twins’ 12-game winning streak was tied for the second-longest in team history, trailing only the 15-win June 1991 run—the final World Series victory Minnesota had.
Rafaela gave the team a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning when he crushed a full count offering from Joe Ryan into the first row of bleachers in left center field.
On April 27, Rafaela hit the team’s previous round-tripper as Boston defeated the Cubs 17 to 0. Grissom led the Sox to a 5-1 lead in the eighth inning with a two-run double. Next up for Smith was a cloudless 69-degree afternoon, and he added a two-run double off the glove of Manuel Margot, who was fighting the sun.
In the ninth, Devers struck a two-run home run. Boston’s starter Cooper Criswell, who required 80 pitches to complete five scoreless innings in each of his previous two outings, gave up one earned run and struck out five in four and a half innings.
The first of five Red Sox relievers, Brennan Bernardino (1-1), picked up the victory. Ryan (1-2) threw a no-hitter that allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out five in his team-high sixth quality start of the year.
After Minnesota had a great chance to cause some early damage, Jeffers hit a single home run in the third inning to give the team a 1-0 lead in front of the second-largest home crowd of the season (29,638).
The Minnesota second inning began with singles by Max Kepler, Carlos Correa, and Larnach. However, Criswell struck out Carlos Santana and Willi Castro, and Jose Miranda then hit a harmless bouncer back to Criswell.
