Concerns regarding wide receiver additions, defensive tackle, and other things
We answer questions regarding Dallas Cowboys players and other team-related topics on Facebook and X (Twitter) once a week. So let’s get started immediately.
“Do you still believe that the Cowboys need defensive tackle, and who are the realistic three-and-one tight ends?”
MIKE: It surprises me that they skipped over it in the draft. Chauncey Golston, if he makes the cut, will probably be shifted to the edge now that Neville Gallimore is gone because the 3-tech position is quite light. Osa Odighizuwa is officially the only 3-tech, but drafting Justin Rogers will aid in stopping the run, as will Mazi Smith on the defensive line.
BRANDON: The Cowboys could use another defensive tackle in terms of numbers. Whether or not the organization adds another player, Justin Rogers has a good chance of making the roster. With his dimensions of 6’2″ and 322 pounds, Rogers fits the bill for what they need in a big man to stop the run. They need bigger 1-techniques.
Right now, the water in the free agency pool appears to be a touch low. Translation: The possibilities available are limited. Two guys that come to mind are Calais Campbell, who was with the Atlanta Falcons last year, and Lawrence Guy, a longtime member of the New England Patriots.
Both are seasoned athletes who have the potential to take the lead right away in a position group that is inexperienced.
“Hunter Renfrow: Should the Cowboys add him?”
MIKE: Whether or not we believe Renfrow to be superior to Jalen Tolbert is the question at hand. You should sign up for Renfrow if you believe the answer is yes. However, Renfrow is only a depth player if he doesn’t surpass Tolbert on the roster; if the Cowboys decide to go that route, there are less expensive possibilities. Renfrow’s main issue is his high rate of dropped passes. He had six drops out of just 25 receptions last year, which is a horrendous efficiency.
The other is that, in the previous year, Tolbert outperformed Renfrow. Renfrow received 255 yards and no touchdowns while Tolbert gained 268 yards and two scores.
Brandon: Hunter Renfrow doesn’t have a place on this roster. The Cowboys want to give Jalen Tolbert every opportunity to succeed, and adding Renfrow to the mix would create more competition.
Behind their top two wide receivers in CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks sits Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, Jalen Brooks, rookie Ryan Flournoy, and a crop of practice squad/undrafted players from a year ago. Not to mention the hype around what Martavis Bryant could be if he looks like his old self.
Barring any injury, I don’t see the Cowboys adding veteran wideouts who would be more than just a rotational player and work on special teams.
“Which Dallas draft choice could be considered a sleeper and could contribute this season?”
MIKE: Based on opportunity and athletic profile, Ryan Flournoy looks like he could have a rookie breakout. At Southeast Missouri State in the last two years, Flournoy went for nearly 2,000 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. But what’s seriously exciting about him is the athletic testing. He finished with a 9.89 RAS (relative athletic score) which is elite scoring. His 40-yard time of 4.44s was 75th percentile, vertical of 39½” finished 89th percentile, broad of 132” was 94th percentile and he pumped 19 reps in the bench. He’s just a special athlete that has huge upside.
Brandon: Considering what I know about Caelen Carson, I wouldn’t be surprised if, as a rookie, he had an impact akin to that of DaRon Bland. There’s a caveat, though: Jourdan Lewis’s season-ending foot injury forced Brandon to enter the picture in the middle of his rookie campaign.
Although Lewis was re-signed this offseason, Carson would need to accomplish a lot to replace him in the slot if he wanted to start at training camp. But nobody anticipated Bland’s rookie season, and Carson shares characteristics with Bland from his coming-out.
Carson is visionary, assertive, and doesn’t back down from a task. Experts have predicted that he may play on the outside based on his intelligence.
