Depressed, unmotivated, and lacking in energy—the Celtic midfielder divulges his dark moments

Reo Hatate has shared his experiences of enduring nearly continual muscular injuries over the past year.

On Sunday, the midfielder made just his fifth SPFL start of the year at Livingston, and he gave an extremely outstanding performance. Hatate had hamstring issues in March of last year, a calf injury in August at Aberdeen, a hamstring problem again seven minutes into the Champions League encounter against Atletico Madrid, and calf issues in January that prevented him from playing in the Asian Cup.

The 26-year-old receives a lot of physical abuse from opponents in his position, but none of his ailments are related to that contact. His nutrition, training regimen, and preparations have all had to be completely reevaluated due to his persistent muscular issues, as Hatate stated in an article published by Japanese magazine Sportiva:

I dealt with my thoughts and sentiments as they came up, and I was depressed for a long period.

That does not imply, however, that I skimped on my rehabilitation or neglected my day-to-day obligations. To put it plainly, I was lacking motivation and energy even though I was giving everything I had. But there are others who worry about me and care about me, including my family, of course. Both my mother and father expressed worry about my condition and my wounds. They got in touch with me, which made me feel better organically.

Brendan Rodgers will be eager to have Hatate back permanently with less than two months left in the season—especially if he can continue to play to the level that was established at Livingston on Sunday.
