Chris Sutton acknowledged that following their own loss to Hearts, Celtic missed a chance to profit from Rangers’ defeat.
Following the final whistle on March 3, the Sky Sports analyst responded immediately to the broadcaster’s coverage of the 2-0 loss at Tynecastle, stating that Brendan Rodgers’ team still has “a lot of work to do” to maintain their second-place standings.
Although it wasn’t taken a day later, Philippe Clement’s team’s shocking 2-1 loss to Motherwell at Ibrox had left the door open for their Old Firm opponents to reclaim the top spot in the SPFL.
At 2:00 p.m., Sutton stated: “They definitely had the chance today, but they chose not to take it.” Highlights of the match, Celtic’s missed penalty, Yang [Hyun-jun]’s dismissal, and the Hearts penalty controversy.
Hearts cross the finish line, and Celtic fails to halt Lawrence Shankland once more. Hearts are improving under Steven Naismith’s leadership. Celtic, there is still much to be done.
“Rangers shocked by Motherwell yesterday, Celtic stung by Hearts today,” remarked pundit Ian Crocker. Now that their weekend is over, Rangers will be feeling much better and Celtic much worse.
Following an incredible run of victories that had seen them overcome a deficit in the title race to go two points clear, the Light Blues were well below par in their home loss to Stuart Kettlewell’s team.
Although not signing Lawrence Shankland might have hurt them at Ibrox on Saturday, the Scot did hurt the Gers for Hearts on Sunday, so they are off the hook thanks to Celtic.
Clement will be working hard to instill in his players the idea that they got away with it this weekend and that they need to make sure the Hoops don’t get another chance.
Despite indications that one team may have completely controlled the momentum during the last few games, the fight for the championship continues with neither team able to absolutely gain the advantage.
A week prior, Rangers had defeated Hearts 5-0. The following weekend, both teams triumphed over the other side of Glasgow, with Celtic pulling off a thrilling victory over Motherwell.
In other Rangers news, following the drama at Ibrox, Clement has been instructed to cease “greeting” about Scottish football.
