Rangers could raise the funds for a permanent Abdallah Sima swoop by qualifying for the Champions League, sources have told Football Insider. The Senegal international scored on his second game back from a long-term injury layoff against Celtic on Sunday (7 April) to help the Gers draw 3-3 at Ibrox.
However, the Gers fear Sima’s parent club Brighton could price them out of a swoop for his services in the off-season. Sources say the Premier League outfit value him at between £10-15million – which could eclipse Rangers’ current club-record £12million move for Tore Andre Flo in November 2000. Football Insider revealed last month (9 March) that Rangers are set to boost their transfer budget by around £20million if they qualify for Champions League football next season.
The Ibrox club can qualify directly for the league phase of next season’s competition by winning the Scottish Premiership – but will otherwise have to navigate the qualifying rounds. Sima, who can play on both flanks and lead the line, has notched 16 goals and two assists in 35 appearances across all competitions this term.
He has not yet played for the South Coast Club.
Rangers, who have a game left against their rivals, Celtic, and Rangers are only one point apart in the Scottish premier league.
