Newcastle United: Are Three Summer Signings Enough?
Newcastle United’s transfer activity—or the current lack of it—is a major talking point this summer. So far, no new first-team signings have been confirmed, but that could soon change, especially after three transfer windows without significant additions to the senior squad.
The confirmed departure of Lloyd Kelly to Juventus, alongside sales like Anderson, Minteh, and Almiron, has raised close to £100 million—almost all of it PSR-friendly profit. This improved the club’s financial outlook, giving them space to invest in first-team talent.
Journalists speculate that Newcastle could spend around £100 million this window. Some believe this could even be a conservative estimate, especially with the expectation that Sean Longstaff could also be sold. As a homegrown player, his sale would boost PSR calculations further.
Attention now turns to possible incoming transfers. Eddie Howe is reportedly targeting three key positions: a right-sided attacker who can also play centrally, a right-sided centre-back, and a goalkeeper to challenge Nick Pope. James Trafford is seen as the likely goalkeeper signing, though Pope is expected to remain the number one for now.
For the attacking position, Anthony Elanga has re-emerged as a strong candidate. Meanwhile, Marc Guehi, who has one year left on his Crystal Palace deal, remains a top target for central defence.
If Newcastle were to land Trafford, Elanga, and Guehi, could that be enough to compete in the Premier League and Champions League—as well as in domestic cup competitions?
A potential starting XI could look like this:
Pope/Trafford
Livarmento – Guehi – Botman – Hall
Tonali – Bruno – Joelinton
Elanga – Isak – Gordon
The bench would still have quality options like Trippier, Schar, Burn, Willock, Miley, Barnes, and Murphy. There’s also youth talent such as Harrison Ashby and Leo Shahar pushing through.
With Trafford (22), Elanga (23), and Guehi (24) fitting the club’s recruitment profile of young players with development and resale potential, this trio would align well with Newcastle’s model.
But the big question remains: would these three signings be enough to make Newcastle United competitive on all four fronts?
