Everton vs. Newcastle United: Premier League Preview, Gameweek 38, 2025

After an extremely hectic week, Everton will travel to the North East to play Newcastle United in their season-ending match, with a 13th-place finish already certain.

In their last three games, David Moyes’ team has scored seven points out of a possible nine, continuing their recent strong run of play. The Toffees’ hero last time out was Illiman Ndiaye, who scored two goals that made the difference in their 2-0 victory over Southampton in the penultimate Premier League match at Goodison Park.

On the other side, even though Newcastle entered the last day in fourth place, they could still finish as low as seventh in the league. The Magpies had won eight of their previous ten games, even though they had just lost to Arsenal. If they defeat Everton on the last day, they will still qualify for the Champions League. But if the home team makes a mistake against its Merseyside visitors, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest will most likely be ready to strike.

Newcastle United

Joelinton and Alexander Isak are both doubtful to play in their team’s pivotal matchup this weekend after failing to appear in their previous game against Arsenal [Source: TalkSPORT]. With the 33-year-old’s contract expiring this summer, this would suggest that Callum Wilson will likely start for Eddie Howe’s team in what will likely be his final game for Newcastle. Matt Targett, Kieran Trippier, and Lewis Hall are still out. Everton Jarrad Branthwaite is a slight doubt after appearing to take a knock against Southampton. Seamus Coleman was also knocked and is not expected to play against Newcastle. [Source: LiverpoolWorld]. Both Orel Mangala and James Tarkowski will not play because of season-ending injuries they sustained earlier in the season.

  • Predicted Line-ups

Newcastle United

Pope, Burn, Botman, Schar, Livramento, Tonali, Guimaraes, Murphy, Gordon, Barnes, Wilson.

Everton

Pickford, Mykolenko, Keane, O’Brien, Patterson, Gueye, Garner, Ndiaye, Doucoure, McNeil, Beto

  • Players to Watch

Newcastle United – Callum Wilson

With Everton potentially having neither of their starting centre-halves available for this clash, Callum Wilson is definately one to watch.

The England international has a fantastic record against the Toffees, scoring against them 6 times for Newcastle and a further 2 times for previous club, Bournemouth.

If Eddie Howe’s side are on form, you can be sure that Wilson will play a massive role.

Everton – Dwight McNeil

Everton’s main emphasis moving forward will probably be on set pieces due to Newcastle’s customary possession domination. Dwight McNeil is probably going to be the one to bring them any joy in dead ball situations. The 25-year-old returned from a long-term injury against Ipswich with a goal, and has supplied an assist in both of his past 2 appearances, both of which ended in wins.
