Next Monday, Newcastle United will formally announce their first summer acquisition.

According to Spanish sources, Newcastle United will formally announce their first summer acquisition next week.

According to Spanish sources, Newcastle United will formally welcome Malaga winger Antonio Cordero next week. Newcastle has been in negotiations with Cordero and his representation since the beginning of the year, as the 18-year-old’s contract is set to expire this summer.

Despite fierce interest from Portuguese team Porto and Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona, Cordero has decided to relocate to the northeast region of England.

Earlier this year, Cordero and his family were shown around the club’s facilities and St. James’ Park.

Next week, Antonio Cordero is expected to join Newcastle United.

Malaga’s 2024–25 season doesn’t end until May 31 and they still have two games to play. The official end of Cordero’s contract is not until June 30. However, Cordero will “officially become a Magpies player in a week at the latest,” according to Spanish daily MARCA. No more.”

Cordero is due to pen a five-year contract until June 2030, though is slated to spend his first year out on loan.

Antonio Cordero is anticipated to be loaned to Newcastle United.

It has been suggested that Ajax is leading the race for Cordero, but according to Spanish news outlet Fundo Segunda, Malaga wants to re-sign him on loan next season in an agreement they believe suits all parties. Newcastle took a similar approach with Yankuba Minteh, who they signed from Danish side Odense Boldklub for £7 million before swiftly loaning him to Feyenoord for the 2023–24 season. Eddie Howe had intended to integrate Minteh into the first-team squad last summer, but he was sold to Brighton & Hove Albion for £33 million in order to help the club comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Cordero first broke into Malaga’s ‘B-team’ and caught the eye in the Spanish fifth league – scoring 12 goals in 17 games. Additionally, he has under-18 and under-19 caps for Spain. Since making his debut in 2023, the teenager has established himself as a mainstay in Malaga’s first squad. He has six goals and seven assists in 37 La Liga 2 games so far this season.

Newcastle United exploring Europe for outstanding young talent

Although he hasn’t made a significant first-team acquisition since taking over as Newcastle’s sports director last summer, Paul Mitchell, the former Monaco manager, has been actively seeking out young players with a lot of promise. Vaktang Salia, a forward for Dinamo Tbilisi, has already agreed to join Newcastle; the deal will be finalized in August, when he turns 18. Baran Yildiz, a Turkish midfielder, came from Genclerbirligi in January.
