Few football fans would contest that Newcastle United’s midfield is now the best in the Premier League when healthy and playing at its best.
You would probably expect former Liverpool star and completely, completely non-biased pundit Jamie Carragher to look to his former club to stack out his midfield for his Team of the Season regardless, but to give credit where credit is due, Carragher chose Sandro Tonali over Ryan Gravenberch during an interview with the Stick To Football podcast. Liverpool has a fantastic midfield, but as demonstrated in the Carabao Cup final, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes are unbeatable when healthy.
Jamie Carragher chooses between Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.
Following his selection, Gary Neville asked Carragher which of Tonali and Guimaraes he would take to Liverpool, and Carragher gave some very good reasons for his choice: “Tonali, and I’ve only said that this season since he went to that [holding] role. Well, Guimaraes is one for me, I think he’s a good player — the Newcastle fans love him, but they love him so much that I sometimes wonder if I’m watching the same game because they love him? I think he’s a really good player, but I think he lacks a bit of pace. I don’t know. I just like the pace and the power of Tonali.
“I watch him knock people off their feet, close people down, and get across people.” “I think I chose Tonali over Gravenberch because of Newcastle’s dominance in midfield [in the Carabao Cup final], which is probably why I did so.”
There is much more to Bruno Guimaraes’s passion than just his on-field exploits.
We also fully comprehend Carragher’s point regarding Guimaraes. Naturally, we understand why Newcastle supporters adore him, and it has nothing to do with his on-field exploits. To see what we love about Bruno, you only need to watch the Premier League’s video from yesterday. However, for the majority of us at NUFC Feed, Tonali is the best. By the way, we would choose Bruno above Ryan Gravenberch. As a huge admirer of Gravenberch, I sincerely hope that the rumors that he was at Newcastle before moving to Liverpool were accurate.
