Interim manager Simon Rusk dismissed speculation about becoming the permanent Saints boss or his future, stating, “I believe in my abilities and my track record.”
Simon Rusk currently holds the best points-per-game record among Southampton managers this season, having secured two draws in his three Premier League games in charge.
Initially brought in as the under-21s manager, the 43-year-old later became a first-team assistant under Ivan Juric. While his academy role has since been filled, Rusk could continue at the club in an assistant capacity once a new permanent manager is appointed this summer.
Speaking ahead of Southampton’s upcoming clash with Fulham, Rusk avoided any speculation about a long-term future as Saints manager. Instead, he emphasized his focus on the present task and respect for the club’s structure.
He explained that leadership has always been part of his role across various levels, including managerial positions, and while he remains ambitious, he acknowledged that timing plays a crucial role in career progression. Rusk stressed that now is not the time to make things about him, preferring to wait until the season concludes for clarity on his future.
Rusk also praised the support from club executives like Johannes Spors, Mark Bitcon, and Phil Parsons, highlighting their honesty and daily guidance. He admitted he knows little about the club’s managerial shortlist and emphasized it wouldn’t be professional to speculate.
His priority, he said, remains on preparing the team, supporting the players and staff, and focusing on delivering for the fans. Rusk expressed how much of an honor it is to lead the team in the Premier League and reaffirmed his belief in his abilities, track record, and experience, balancing humility with ambition.
