Aston Villa have unveiled new stadium plans, while Newcastle United are still exploring options for St James’ Park.
Newcastle United and Aston Villa are both positioning themselves as serious contenders among the Premier League’s elite. While Newcastle’s Champions League hopes were recently dented by a 4-1 defeat to Villa, Aston Villa’s own loss to Manchester City has kept the race wide open.
Off the pitch, both clubs are pushing forward with ambitious infrastructure plans to support their top-six aspirations. While Newcastle’s owners, PIF, continue to assess options for St James’ Park, Aston Villa have just unveiled major redevelopment plans for Villa Park.
Villa’s project includes a £100 million expansion that will boost the stadium’s capacity from 42,640 to over 50,000, with work expected to be completed by 2027 in time to serve as a Euro 2028 venue.
In contrast, Newcastle’s potential stadium plans are on a much grander scale. Proposals include a new ground with a capacity of up to 68,000—potentially the second-largest in the Premier League. If the plans go ahead, costs could reach £1.2 billion, depending on the final design and location.
While Villa’s project is ambitious, Newcastle’s plans could eclipse it entirely. With PIF aiming for a world-class venue and the club’s huge fanbase backing the vision, Newcastle’s stadium development, though longer-term with a target completion around 2030, promises to be transformative.
