West Ham can’t endure consecutive managerial mistakes.

The jury is still out on West Ham manager Graham Potter, though some believe he just needs a squad overhaul to succeed. The hope is that, once Potter assembles his ideal team, West Ham will improve. However, that seems unlikely at the moment, as the club is sinking in the Premier League, and Potter’s potential seems more dependent on specific conditions than tangible results.

At this point, his appointment appears more risky than revolutionary, based on hope rather than evidence, and West Ham can’t afford another managerial mistake. Back-to-back poor managerial decisions often lead to a sharp decline, and the previous regime under Julen Lopetegui was disastrous.

Lopetegui looks stressed in West Ham presser

While Lopetegui’s tenure was poor, West Ham’s survival can be credited to his points tally. However, the club has struggled to identify the right managers. Before Lopetegui’s hiring, many doubted his suitability, and while the club acted quickly to correct their mistake, Potter’s appointment raises even more concerns. Despite hopes he’ll improve, he’s been underwhelming compared to his predecessor.

Some argue that Potter is a victim of inheriting a poor squad, but that doesn’t hold when you consider that the previous manager managed to achieve more with the same players. West Ham now faces the prospect of two disastrous managerial decisions, which will be tough to recover from.

It seems that Potter was chosen based on advice from chief executive Karren Brady, with his appointment reflecting a scattergun approach that successful clubs avoid. Although there’s no immediate talk about his future, West Ham’s support for him feels more like hope than genuine belief that he can turn things around.
