According to authorities, the crash occurred late Saturday night while the team was returning home from a regional tournament. The players were part of the Northwestern Ohio Renegades, a competitive youth baseball program known for developing top-level talent across the region.
Victims Identified
The two young athletes who tragically lost their lives have been identified as:
- Carter “CJ” Reynolds (16) of Bowling Green
- Eli Martinez (17) of Defiance
Both players were traveling with teammates in a team van when the accident happened on Interstate 75, approximately 10 miles north of Lima. Initial reports indicate the vehicle lost control during heavy rain, hydroplaned, and collided with an oncoming vehicle. Emergency crews responded to the scene, but Reynolds and Martinez were pronounced dead upon arrival.
Four Others Injured
Four additional players and one assistant coach were also injured in the crash. Two players are currently listed in critical condition at Lima Memorial Hospital, while the others are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The assistant coach, who was driving the van, is cooperating fully with the investigation and was treated for minor injuries.
Remembering CJ and Eli

Both boys were standout students and had been receiving attention from college scouts. Reynolds, a left-handed pitcher, had recently been invited to a showcase in Georgia, while Martinez was working toward a scholarship opportunity with a Division II program in Ohio.

The loss has deeply affected their hometowns and schools. Bowling Green High School and Defiance High School held moments of silence during morning announcements Monday, and grief counselors have been made available to students.
