Brighton-Liverpool swap deal makes sense as Reds eye £70m move for Kaoru Mitoma.

Liverpool are expected to target Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma in the summer.

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Brighton’s Japanese winger Kaoru Mitoma this summer.

The 27-year-old has been one of Brighton’s standout performers, registering eight goals and three assists across all competitions. He has made 28 Premier League starts this season, only recently missing his first league match during the 2-2 draw against Leicester.

Back in January, Saudi side Al Nassr made two bids for Mitoma, reportedly close to £70 million. However, Brighton rejected them, as they rarely sell key players mid-season. Mitoma, for his part, is said to prefer a move to a Champions League club rather than the Saudi Pro League.

Brighton currently sit 10th in the Premier League following a dip in form, making Champions League qualification unlikely. With six matches remaining, a Europa or Conference League place is still in reach. Whether that will satisfy Mitoma remains uncertain. He has two years left on his contract, but there have been no talks about an extension.

Brighton CEO Paul Barber has previously acknowledged that the club is open to selling top talent, and a summer exit for Mitoma could generate a huge profit on the £3 million they paid Kawasaki Frontale in 2021.

Liverpool, preparing for a major squad reshuffle under incoming boss Arne Slot, could be a potential destination. With players like Trent Alexander-Arnold linked to Real Madrid and Luis Díaz to Barcelona, and doubts surrounding Andy Robertson and Darwin Núñez, the Reds are exploring new signings. Kaoru Mitoma is viewed as a strong option to reinforce the left flank alongside target Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.

Brighton reportedly value Mitoma at over £70 million. While they generally prefer cash-only deals, a swap could be considered. One name that stands out is Harvey Elliott.

The 22-year-old midfielder, though limited to 12 league appearances this season, has been on Brighton’s radar before. Despite limited starts, Elliott has made 141 appearances for Liverpool since 2019 and has won multiple trophies, including the Premier League and two Carabao Cups.

Elliott offers youth, versatility, and experience — qualities that suit Brighton’s model. While not a direct replacement for Mitoma, he could be a valuable asset for the Seagulls if a swap deal were pursued.
