Victory over Leicester City puts them on track for Champions League qualification.
Leicester — After Newcastle United’s first domestic trophy in 70 years and the excitement of an open-top bus parade through the city, there was concern that Eddie Howe’s team might lose focus on their goal of Champions League qualification.
However, consecutive Premier League wins since their March Wembley victory over Liverpool, including a 3-0 triumph at Leicester City on Monday, have kept them firmly on track for a return to Europe’s top competition.
Jacob Murphy’s early brace and Harvey Barnes’ goal before halftime made the game comfortable for Newcastle, pushing them above Manchester City into fifth place. They are now level on 53 points with fourth-placed Chelsea, with a game in hand.
“There was a worry after winning the cup that we might drop off,” Howe admitted. “It’s a big achievement, and the challenge was whether we could go again. A top-four finish would mean a great deal, but right now, we just need to win games.”
Newcastle will face Manchester United this weekend, followed by Crystal Palace at home and a trip to top-four rivals Aston Villa. Howe knows these upcoming games are crucial.
“We’re playing with confidence, but the next three games will be tough,” Howe said. “It’s going to heat up, and these matches will be pivotal in determining where we finish at the end of the season.”
Murphy reflected on the team’s strong morale. “The bus tour was unforgettable, and you can see why great players get addicted to winning trophies,” he said. “Now, we’re back in training, hungry for more success next season and aiming to keep improving.”
