Club Brugge’s Shandré Campbell: South Africa’s Rising Star Shining in Belgium

Shandré Campbell’s rapid rise from South Africa’s Gauteng Development League to Club Brugge’s senior team has been nothing short of remarkable.

The 19-year-old winger, who joined Brugge from SuperSport United, has quickly become one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents, earning praise for his maturity, skill, and seamless transition to European football.

Early Promise at SuperSport United

Campbell burst onto the scene during the 2023-24 season, making an immediate impact with SuperSport United.

South African football expert Sahil Ebrahim recalls, “He showed a lot of maturity, a lot of football maturity. He knew when to take on players and when to release the ball.

” Campbell’s debut season saw him score five goals and provide six assists, earning him a move to Club Brugge.

Thriving at Club Brugge

Since joining Brugge, Campbell has continued to impress, scoring eight goals in 17 games for Club NXT (Brugge’s reserve team) before earning a promotion to the senior squad.

His performances have drawn comparisons to past South African talents who struggled abroad, but Campbell’s seamless adaptation sets him apart.

A New Wave of South African Talent

Campbell’s success is part of a broader resurgence in South African football, with young players like Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota also making waves. Ebrahim believes Campbell’s move to Belgium could inspire others to follow suit, saying, “He’s being a good role model. Other young players see his move and think, ‘Maybe that’s better for me.’”

Future Prospects

With his talent and resilience, Campbell is poised to become a key figure for South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana.

As Ebrahim notes, “Barring injuries, he’ll be set for a national team role very soon.”
