Mayenda on Bellingham
Speaking to El Desmarque, Mayenda said, “Jobe is a great player. We don’t talk much about Jude, but I have a very good relationship with Jobe. He’s very talented, a hard worker, and if he continues like this, he’ll be able to play anywhere.”
Adapting to English Football
Mayenda also reflected on the challenges of adapting to English football, describing it as “very physical and competitive.” He added, “I’ve been lucky to get opportunities with Sunderland, and the adaptation is going very well. The more games you play, the better you adapt, but it’s true that it’s hard at first.”
Balancing Ambitions
When asked to choose between winning the U21 European Championship with Spain or securing promotion to the Premier League with Sunderland, Mayenda diplomatically replied, “I’d say both. They’re different, but I couldn’t choose.”
Early Life and Move to France
Born in Spain, Mayenda moved to France at age eight due to his father’s work. He described the transition as challenging, particularly with the language barrier, but credited his time at Sochaux’s youth academy for shaping his career. “Being so young and living in France was complicated,” he said. “I didn’t want to leave Zaragoza, but I had no choice. I still have family there and visit whenever I can.”
