The South Korean star’s Spurs future is uncertain this summer after fulfilling his long-time dream at the club.
One of Thomas Frank’s first major tasks at Tottenham will be addressing Son Heung-min’s future. According to football.london, the Spurs captain is more open to leaving the club this summer than ever before.
Frank is expected to join from Brentford soon, pending final agreements on his move and coaching staff. Once he arrives in north London, he’ll inherit a squad facing key decisions, especially regarding senior figures like Son and vice-captain Cristian Romero.
Much like when Ange Postecoglou lost Harry Kane to Bayern Munich shortly after arriving in 2023, Frank could face a similar early challenge. Romero has two years left on his contract and has been linked with Atletico Madrid, while Son has just 12 months remaining after Spurs extended his deal mid-season.
Now 32, Son endured a mixed campaign, struggling with a foot injury and inconsistent form. He managed just seven Premier League goals but still contributed 23 goal involvements in 46 matches across all competitions. His crowning moment was lifting the Europa League trophy — the club’s first silverware in 17 years — fulfilling a dream he had chased throughout his decade-long Spurs career.
With that long-awaited triumph secured, Son is reportedly more open to a transfer if the right offer comes along. He previously said his main motivation for staying at Spurs was to win a trophy, which he has now achieved.
Clubs in the Saudi Pro League are expected to pursue Son, drawn by his star power and huge influence across Asia. A move to MLS has also been mentioned — particularly to LAFC, where his former teammate Hugo Lloris plays — but financial limitations may rule that out.
For Tottenham, Son remains a major marketing asset, especially with a preseason tour to Hong Kong and South Korea coming up. But with his contract running out and his 33rd birthday approaching, they must weigh his value on and off the pitch against the risk of losing him for free in 2026 — just as they did with Kane.
Frank will likely want to convince Son to stay and outline his vision for the future. Known for his strong rapport with players, the Danish coach could be the right figure to help the forward rediscover top form — as Postecoglou referenced using Mohamed Salah as an example last season.
Ultimately, Son’s future will depend on both Tottenham’s stance and his personal decision. He’s currently on international duty after helping South Korea qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Following Postecoglou’s exit, Son paid tribute to his former manager, calling the Australian a “Tottenham legend” and thanking him for trusting him with the captaincy — one of the highest honours of his career.
Son has already cemented his legacy at Tottenham. The coming weeks will determine whether his Europa League triumph marks the end of an era — or the beginning of a new chapter under Thomas Frank.
