Aston Villa hesitates on €30m player deal — already €30m below release clause, no more discounts expected

At the start of this year, reports from Portugal revealed that Aston Villa had sent a scout to observe Sporting’s Geny Catamo.

Catamo, who mainly plays as a wing-back on both flanks, impressed this season with seven goals and five assists in 48 appearances.

The 24-year-old’s strong performances have caught Aston Villa’s eye. According to Monday’s edition of A Bola, Villa have added him to their summer ‘shopping list.’

Catamo’s contract runs until 2028 and includes a €60m release clause. Sporting currently owns 25% of his rights, while the remaining 75% belongs to his former club, Amora.

If Catamo stays, Sporting plans to offer him a new contract with a salary boost. He isn’t among the club’s highest earners and could be tempted by an attractive offer from Aston Villa.

However, Villa are reluctant to meet Sporting’s valuation. A Bola reports that Sporting has already dropped the price from €60m to €30m, but Aston Villa remain unconvinced.

The newspaper adds that Sporting “might reduce the price further but will never sell the player at a bargain — not by a long shot.”
