Aston Villa legend misses out on reunion after club confirms dismissal

Aston Villa legend Olof Mellberg will not be reuniting with his former club this summer after being sacked by MLS side St. Louis.

Villa are scheduled to face St. Louis at Energizer Park on Wednesday, July 30, followed by a clash with Nashville SC on August 2. However, Mellberg won’t be in the dugout for the friendly after a string of poor results led to his departure.

Under Mellberg’s leadership, St. Louis managed just two wins in 15 games, leaving them second from bottom in the MLS Western Conference. The team also struggled offensively, an issue highlighted in the club’s statement.

Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel explained that the decision was based on more than just results. He emphasized the need to return to the club’s original playing identity and restore a winning culture for the fans. While acknowledging Mellberg’s effort and the challenges he faced, including injuries, Pfannenstiel said the club could not afford to continue on the same trajectory.

Club president Diego Gigliani added that Mellberg worked hard since arriving from Sweden and wished him success in the future.
