Juventus have officially confirmed that Lloyd Kelly’s move from Newcastle United has been made permanent, following his initial loan in the winter transfer window.
Italian outlet *Calciomercato* reviewed Juventus’ season and offered insight into why the club pushed for the defender’s signing. The Bianconeri finished fourth in Serie A, 12 points behind champions Napoli. Their position might have been stronger if not for the long-term injury suffered by Gleison Bremer in October.
Bremer featured in just eight games, with Juventus keeping six clean sheets during those matches. After his injury, the team’s defensive solidity declined, prompting an urgent search for reinforcements.
That urgency led to Kelly’s arrival from Newcastle in January. According to *Calciomercato*, Juventus were so desperate for a centre-back that they agreed to a €20m obligation to buy—now activated.
The report suggests this move reflects poorly on Juve’s decision-making, calling it another example of short-term thinking. Meanwhile, Newcastle United benefit significantly, having signed Kelly for free the previous summer and now turning a solid profit from his sale.
