According to a rumor, Newcastle United is now scheduled to meet in person this week to discuss a summer contract for a “unbelievable” forward.
Wilson is leaving as the Magpies look for fresh forwards.
It’s safe to say that Callum Wilson has been a tremendous asset to Newcastle, having made 129 appearances for the team. However, it appears that his time at St. James’ Park will come to an end when his contract expires this summer. The Englishman has been sidelined by injuries throughout the season and is now beginning to draw interest from other teams, with Leeds United reportedly leading the race for his services. As a result, Howe’s team has begun to scout possible replacements, with the manager especially interested in signing versatile Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, who is one of the Premier League’s top scorers this season.
Player | Premier League goals |
Mohamed Salah | 28 |
Alexander Isak | 23 |
Erling Haaland | 21 |
Chris Wood | 19 |
Bryan Mbeumo | 19 |
However, according to a source from talkSPORT, Newcastle is now preparing to have in-person discussions this week on a deal for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, indicating that Mbeumo is not the only Premier League forward of interest. The Magpies are the most recent English team to show interest in exercising the £30 million release clause in Delap’s contract. Delap intends to meet face-to-face with all of his possible suitors prior to the summer transfer window.
In order to relieve Alexander Isak of the goal-scoring load, Howe is eager to add another striker. This summer, the manager plans to bolster his team in a variety of ways.
Delap’s “unbelievable” ability to challenge Isak for the starting position
Understandably, Wilson’s game time has been very limited this season, given that Isak has enjoyed his best season to date in a Newcastle shirt, leading his side to EFL Cup glory and scoring 27 goals in all competitions.
However, the Ipswich star has also started to make a name for himself this season, finding the back of the net 12 times in the Premier League, with teammate Luke Woolfenden lauding him as “unbelievable”.
“He’s a pivotal player for [Ipswich], there’s no denying that,” Howe said, expressing his admiration for the 22-year-old’s early success in the Premier League. He’s had a great season, in my opinion. He is a strong, powerful runner with several strengths. Newcastle’s biggest worry is that if Delap doesn’t have assurances that he will be a regular starter, which is unlikely until Isak decides to go, he might not be persuaded to come to St. James’ Park this summer.
