Everton are set to host Southampton at Goodison Park on Sunday in what promises to be an emotional farewell to their historic home of 133 years. The match marks the final game at the Grand Old Lady before the club moves to a new stadium next season.
The atmosphere is expected to be electric, with tributes pouring in from football legends like Carlo Ancelotti, Sir Alex Ferguson, and Jose Mourinho, all expressing their fondness for Goodison. From next season, the iconic ground will be home to Everton’s women’s team.
As the emotional send-off approaches, Paul Merson has offered his prediction for the game. Writing in his Sportskeeda column, Merson highlighted the weight of the occasion and backed Everton to rise to it.
“This will be a huge occasion, and the atmosphere will be intense,” Merson wrote. “Southampton did well against Manchester City, but I don’t think they’ll ruin Everton’s party. Goodison means a lot to football, and this farewell will be special.”
He predicted a 3-0 win for Everton, adding that while moving to a new stadium will be challenging, with David Moyes in charge, the Toffees could aim for a solid mid-table finish next season along with a good cup run.
Despite Merson’s optimism, recent form against Southampton isn’t on Everton’s side. The Toffees have lost four of their last five meetings with the Saints, including a 1-0 defeat earlier this season. Adam Armstrong was the hero for Southampton in that game, scoring a late winner.
Still, with relegated Southampton out of the top-flight picture and Everton eager to give their fans a proper goodbye, the Merseyside club remains the favorite. The squad could even don a special edition kit to mark the momentous occasion.
