Sven Botman injury update – Newcastle share latest on comeback after second knee surgery.

Sven Botman Injury Update: Early Return Possible for Newcastle Defender

Newcastle United assistant manager Jason Tindall offered a promising update on Sven Botman during his press conference ahead of the club’s clash with Aston Villa.

Botman, 25, has endured a frustrating 2024 campaign. After recovering from ACL surgery last March, he picked up another knee injury—this time to the opposite knee—just five games into his return. That setback occurred during the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg and has kept him sidelined ever since.

An initial recovery timeline suggested Botman would return in early May. However, Tindall hinted the Dutch defender could return sooner than expected.

Botman Close to Comeback, Could Feature vs Ipswich

Botman is now back training with the team, though he won’t be ready for selection against Aston Villa. That said, Tindall confirmed the centre-back could be available for next weekend’s fixture against Ipswich Town.

“Certainly not this weekend,” said Tindall. “But he’s ahead of schedule. He’s back on the grass and joining in some parts of training. Maybe next weekend he could be available. We’ll assess that in the coming days.”

With Newcastle chasing a Champions League spot, Botman’s return could be a major boost for the final stretch of the season.

Botman May Have to Wait His Turn

Despite nearing a return, Botman may find it difficult to break into Newcastle’s starting lineup. The Magpies have won six straight matches with an unchanged XI, and defenders like Dan Burn and Fabian Schär have been in superb form.

Tindall drew comparisons with Anthony Gordon’s situation. Despite returning from suspension and injury, Gordon has had to settle for a place on the bench thanks to the strong form of Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy.

Tindall praised Gordon’s professionalism, suggesting Botman may need to show the same patience.

“At times like this, as frustrating as it can be, you have to support the team and stay ready,” said Tindall. “When your chance comes, deliver the performance everyone knows you’re capable of.”

With Botman’s return on the horizon, Newcastle will soon have a key asset back for their top-four push—though patience may be required before he reclaims his spot.
