Junior Tchamadeu’s long throw helped Stoke City clinch a crucial win at Cardiff, and now the Potters return home to face Sheffield Wednesday in front of a full house.
Mark Robins is determined to use every possible advantage to help Stoke City succeed—whether it’s a long throw-in or the energy of a packed stadium.
Stoke’s crucial winner at Cardiff came from a long throw by Junior Tchamadeu, a rare sight reminiscent of Rory Delap’s iconic deliveries. When asked if he would train players specifically on that technique, Robins emphasized that his focus is on putting players in the best position to succeed in any situation.
All eyes are now on Friday’s match against Sheffield Wednesday, which will be played in front of the club’s biggest home crowd since their Premier League days in 2018.
“We always try to use players’ strengths,” said Robins. “Every game presents different scenarios, so we aim to recognize and react to them effectively. Against Cardiff, it was a scrappy match on a tricky pitch, but we created good chances and handled the pressure well.”
Looking ahead, Robins remains grounded. “We’re in a stronger position than before the Cardiff game. There are four matches left and 12 points to play for. We’ll give our best against teams fighting for different goals—Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, Sheffield United, and Derby.”
The Sheffield Wednesday match is especially meaningful—not just for the points, but because of the record crowd and what it represents. “It’s a special moment for the club and fans. I’ve talked to the players about the expectations, but we’re also going to enjoy it. It’s a real honour to play in front of a full house again.”
Adding to the emotional significance of the day, seven-year-old fan Oliver Royles, who recently completed treatment for cancer, will lead the team out.
Robins praised the young supporter: “It’s fantastic for Oliver and his family. What he’s endured is unimaginable, but he’s come through it. He’s a true Stoke fan, and meeting him at the club was a powerful moment. We’re all looking forward to seeing him again on Friday.”
