Andy Naylor, The Athletic: Brighton’s Transformation Under Fabian Hürzeler

The Athletic’s Andy Naylor highlights Brighton’s evolution under head coach Fabian Hürzeler, ahead of their clash with Brentford on Saturday.

According to Naylor, while Brighton still focus on playing attractive football, they’ve become more willing to go direct when needed. Hürzeler’s main philosophy, he notes, is all about maintaining high intensity both on and off the ball.

Appointed in June 2024 after Roberto De Zerbi’s departure, Fabian Hürzeler has made an immediate impact at Brighton & Hove Albion. With just six Premier League games remaining, the 32-year-old has the Seagulls in contention for a European spot.

Speaking to The Athletic, Andy Naylor described Brighton’s season as inconsistent — a mix of strong performances and disappointing spells. The inconsistency, he explains, is partly due to a new coach, a high player turnover, and numerous injuries, which have disrupted momentum throughout the campaign.

Brighton currently sit 10th in the table, and while European qualification remains a goal, finishing in the top 10 is seen as part of the club’s broader ambition. Naylor notes that even if they miss out on Europe, another top-half finish would signal continued growth for a club in only its eighth top-flight season.

One of the Seagulls’ biggest setbacks was an FA Cup exit to Nottingham Forest, which also saw them lose standout attacker Georginio Rutter to injury. Kaoru Mitoma’s fitness also remains a question, but João Pedro continues to be a key attacking force, especially from the penalty spot.

In terms of tactics, Hürzeler’s Brighton differ from De Zerbi’s methodical build-up play. While they still try to play out, there’s now more directness and an emphasis on intensity. Hürzeler’s aim is to make Brighton the fittest, most intense team in the Premier League — something he admits is still a work in progress.

As Brighton prepare to face Brentford this weekend, Naylor predicts a close contest, tipping a 1-1 draw between two evenly matched teams.
