There were two clear signs that made West Ham defender Emerson realise his time at the club was coming to an end.
The first was the surprising decision to start youngster Ollie Scarles against Liverpool—not just any Liverpool team, but one featuring Mohamed Salah, arguably the best player in the league. That choice alone spoke volumes about Emerson’s standing in the squad.
But it was the second half that delivered the real blow. As Scarles visibly struggled to contain Salah—especially after the Egyptian had just signed a new deal—many expected Emerson to come on as the obvious replacement. Instead, manager Graham Potter turned to right-back Vladimir Coufal, shifting Aaron Wan-Bissaka over to the left side.
When your manager chooses to play an out-of-position right-back rather than trust you in your natural role, the message couldn’t be clearer. With Juventus reportedly showing interest, Emerson looks set to be one of the first to leave the London Stadium as Potter quietly begins his rebuild at West Ham.
