Tragic report: The Texas longhorn team Mourns Two Players Lost in Horrific Crash as Listed…
Austin, Texas – April 14, 2025
A wave of sorrow has swept across the University of Texas at Austin and the entire college football community, as the Texas Longhorns mourn the devastating loss of two of their own. In a tragic car crash that occurred late Sunday night, two beloved players from the Longhorns football team were pronounced dead at the scene, leaving teammates, coaches, and fans grappling with shock, disbelief, and overwhelming grief.
The accident, which took place on Interstate 35 just outside of Austin, claimed the lives of sophomore wide receiver Malik Thompson and junior defensive end James “JJ” Carter. According to preliminary reports from the Austin Police Department, the vehicle they were traveling in collided with a semi-truck that had jackknifed across two lanes due to slick road conditions caused by a sudden rainstorm. First responders arrived at the scene within minutes, but despite emergency efforts, both players succumbed to their injuries.
A Heartbreaking Blow to the Longhorn Family
News of the tragedy spread quickly across the university campus, where students gathered in silent vigils and makeshift memorials were erected outside Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium. Candles, flowers, jerseys, and heartfelt notes now line the stadium gates as fans and fellow students remember the vibrant lives of Thompson and Carter.
Head Coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the media Monday morning, his voice choked with emotion.
“This is the darkest day I’ve ever experienced as a coach,” Sarkisian said. “Malik and JJ were more than just athletes. They were sons, brothers, and leaders—on and off the field. Their energy was infectious, their commitment to this team unwavering, and their love for each other like family. We are heartbroken beyond words.”
University President Jay Hartzell also issued a statement expressing condolences and pledging support for the families of the deceased.
“The University of Texas is grieving alongside the Longhorn football team. We will do everything we can to support their families, friends, and the student body during this painful time. Malik and James will forever remain part of our Longhorn legacy.”
A Promising Future Cut Short
Malik Thompson, just 19, had quickly made a name for himself after being recruited out of Dallas’s South Oak Cliff High School. Known for his lightning speed and strong hands, Thompson had been projected to be a breakout star in the coming season. Off the field, he was majoring in kinesiology and had dreams of becoming a sports therapist after his football career.
James “JJ” Carter, 21, was a fan favorite and a defensive powerhouse known for his relentless pressure on quarterbacks and fierce tackling. A native of Houston, Carter had started in nearly every game last season and was on the radar of several NFL scouts. His charismatic presence and loud, contagious laugh made him a natural leader in the locker room and beyond.
“They were brothers in every sense,” said senior linebacker DeShawn Hill. “They looked out for each other, pushed each other to be better, and had each other’s backs no matter what. I can’t believe they’re gone.”
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched a full investigation into the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that heavy rain and limited visibility played a significant role in the accident. The semi-truck involved reportedly lost control and skidded across the highway moments before the vehicle carrying Thompson and Carter approached.
Captain Rachel Martinez of the Austin Police Department provided an update Monday afternoon.
“While we are still gathering information, at this time we believe this was a tragic accident with no signs of foul play or intoxication. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and we are working closely with the university to provide answers and support.”
The driver of the semi-truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been cooperating fully with the investigation.
Community Responds With Outpouring of Support
In the wake of the tragedy, messages of sympathy have poured in from across the nation. Alumni, former players, and rival schools have extended their condolences on social media. The Texas A&M football team, longtime rivals of the Longhorns, paused their practice session Monday afternoon for a moment of silence in honor of Thompson and Carter.
NFL stars with Texas roots, including Colt McCoy and Justin Tucker, also took to social media to express their heartbreak and support.
“Heartbroken for the Longhorn family,” McCoy tweeted. “Praying for strength and healing for everyone affected by this unimaginable loss.”
The university has opened a grief counseling center in the Student Activity Center and encouraged students, faculty, and staff to seek support.
Celebration of Life Services Planned
Family members of both players have confirmed that public memorial services will be held later this week. Thompson’s family has requested that his service be held in Dallas, where he grew up, while Carter’s celebration of life will take place in Houston. The Longhorn football team is expected to attend both events.
A special memorial tribute will be held during the Longhorns’ spring game this coming Saturday. The team plans to wear helmet stickers featuring the initials “MT” and “JC” throughout the 2025 season in honor of their fallen teammates.
Legacy Beyond the Field
Though their lives were cut tragically short, Malik Thompson and James Carter have left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew them. Teammates remember Thompson’s quiet determination and Carter’s boisterous spirit—each of them inspiring in their own way.
Coach Sarkisian summed up their legacy poignantly: “They gave everything to this program—not just their talent, but their heart and soul. Our locker room, our campus, and our lives are better because of them. They will be remembered, always.”
As the Texas Longhorns prepare to move forward, they do so carrying the memory of two young men whose dreams, passions, and brotherhood defined their time on the field and will continue to inspire the Longhorn community for years to come.
