‘No debate’ – Eddie Howe to firmly follow Newcastle United’s strict blueprint

Newcastle United players can celebrate after the season ends, but Eddie Howe demands full focus for the final eight matches.

Eddie Howe has reflected on his decision to ban alcohol during Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup celebrations and shared insight into the disciplined culture he’s building at the club.

While Howe allowed the players to enjoy a few drinks following their 2-1 win over Liverpool at Wembley, and even gave them some downtime during the Dubai international break, he quickly enforced a no-alcohol policy ahead of their next match against Brentford. Every player stuck to the plan without hesitation.

Rather than viewing Howe as a “killjoy,” the squad understood the importance of staying sharp during the crucial run-in. With Champions League qualification still in reach, they needed to be in peak condition.

Speaking to Chronicle Live, Howe said: “For me, there wasn’t even a debate around alcohol. We had a game just around the corner and we needed the players in their best condition to try to win that game. Also, I don’t think seeing professional players intoxicated is a great look. It’s not a good example for kids.”

The team celebrated their trophy win with soft drinks, tea, and coffee during the city parade—no champagne, no excess. For Howe, this kept the moment meaningful and clear.

“In many ways, it was the perfect day,” he added. “The players can absorb and memorise what they are seeing, rather than it all being a bit hazy.”
