Brighton and Hove Albion defender Valentin Barco’s struggles during his loan spell at Sevilla were partly his own fault, according to Sevilla legend Antonio Pérez, known as Antoñito.
Barco joined Sevilla in the summer with hopes of gaining regular playing time, but he found himself sidelined, making just nine appearances and playing a total of 466 minutes in the first half of the season. His loan was terminated in January, and he moved to Racing Strasbourg in France, where he’s already made a stronger impact, contributing two assists in eight appearances.
Antoñito believes part of the blame for Barco’s failed spell at Sevilla lies with the player himself. He stated that the Argentine didn’t put in enough effort to adapt to the team, despite being surrounded by experienced players like Acuña, Ocampos, and Banega.
He emphasized that Sevilla requires instant performance, and Barco’s failure to seize the opportunity allowed other teammates to take his spot. However, Antoñito acknowledged Barco’s talent and expressed confidence that things would work out better for him at Strasbourg.
