Building the Offense
While Chicago’s players haven’t all reported yet, Johnson is laying the foundation. Step one? Establishing a common terminology among the offensive staff, which includes OC Declan Doyle, RBs coach Eric Bieniemy, and WRs coach Antwaan Randle El.
When asked about Caleb Williams, Johnson didn’t see any glaring issues but acknowledged the young QB may need to adjust to taking more snaps under center—something integral to Johnson’s offense in Detroit.
Embracing Analytics
Johnson is modernizing the Bears’ approach. He emphasized the importance of Expected Points Added (EPA) in passing plays, stating that teams with a higher EPA in the passing game win 80% of the time. Five years ago, turnovers were the key metric—now, passing efficiency is king.
Braxton Jones’ Recovery & Expectations
Jones is on track in his recovery from a broken ankle, though he may be limited in training camp. Johnson believes in his athleticism but wants him to add weight to improve his pass protection as he enters a crucial contract year.
With Johnson at the helm, the Bears are evolving in both strategy and execution.
