Liam Delap’s future at Ipswich Town is set to be a major talking point, especially if the club faces relegation from the Premier League. Signed from Manchester City last summer for £15 million plus add-ons, the 22-year-old has been a standout performer, reaching double figures in goals despite playing for a struggling side.
Delap’s Exit Could Benefit Both Sides
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit David Prutton shared his thoughts on Delap’s future.
“Liam Delap potentially leaving Ipswich if they go down again—there’s a lot of money involved for a player I’ve seen develop and improve,” Prutton said.
“We saw him at Stoke, then mature further at Hull City. When he was injured, he was sorely missed. Now, getting into double figures in the Premier League proves his talent.”
Prutton highlighted Delap’s physicality and technical ability, noting that he possesses the attributes of a classic centre-forward.
“At 22, he’s approaching his prime. If Ipswich invested in him for the long term, they’d want him to grow into a top player over the next five to seven years. But given his talent, interest from clubs like Arsenal, Man United, Chelsea, and Liverpool isn’t surprising.”
With Ipswich paying around £20-25 million for Delap, Prutton believes the club could demand an even higher fee if they decide to cash in.
“If Ipswich go down, they could easily make a profit on him. Selling for serious money would be a big decision, but one they might have to consider.”
Ipswich Relegation Likely to Force Delap’s Departure
As the gap between Ipswich and safety grows, their chances of staying in the Premier League are fading. With 10 goals in his first full top-flight season, Delap has already proven he belongs at this level.
His performances have attracted interest from major clubs like Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United, all of whom are searching for a traditional yet technically skilled No.9.
Delap’s Premier League Stats (via WhoScored)
Appearances (Starts/Subs): 27 (1)
Goals: 10
Assists: 2
Expected Goals (xG): 10.38
Dribbles per 90: 1.1
Pass Success Rate: 63.5%
Some reports suggest Delap could command a £40 million transfer fee, doubling Ipswich’s initial investment. While the club would prefer to keep him, a sale could be too good to refuse.
With both parties having strong reasons to part ways, it’s increasingly unlikely Delap will play in the Championship next season.
