Stoke City may need to act fast in the transfer market this summer as Premier League clubs prepare to vote on an early window closure, with the EFL likely to follow suit.
Premier League teams will decide on Thursday whether to set the transfer deadline for August 14, just two days before their season begins. With the Championship kicking off on August 9-10 and League One and League Two starting even earlier, the change would shorten the window by about two and a half weeks. For the proposal to pass, 14 out of 20 Premier League clubs must vote in favor.
This move, reported by The Telegraph, echoes the 2018 and 2019 seasons when the Premier League ended transfers before the campaign began. The decision was later reversed due to concerns that European clubs, whose windows remained open until the end of August, could lure Premier League players without allowing English clubs to sign replacements.
A Premier League shift would likely impact lower divisions as well. In 2018, the EFL aligned with the Premier League’s deadline for permanent transfers, though loans remained open until August 31. That year, Stoke rushed to complete an August 9 deal for Sam Clucas while also securing a late loan move for Ryan Woods, which later became permanent. In 2019, Championship clubs had to complete both permanent and loan deals by the Premier League’s deadline, while League One and Two had extra time. Stoke, under Nathan Jones, made last-minute loan signings for Cameron Carter-Vickers and Mark Duffy.
Premier League managers often prefer early business to avoid mid-season distractions, and if the rule passes, Stoke’s recruitment team—headed by Ian Torrance, sporting director Jon Walters, and manager Mark Robins—will face additional pressure. With five loanees in the first team and eight more players out of contract, a major squad overhaul is inevitable.
Financial Fair Play restrictions will add another layer of complexity, as Stoke must still account for the £18m spending spree under Alex Neil and Ricky Martin in 2023. However, before any transfer plans can take shape, the club’s immediate priority is securing their Championship status, with eight games remaining to pull clear of the relegation zone.
