Marc Guehi reacts to Tuchel’s surprise snub after England return: ‘It’s motivation, not pressure’

Crystal Palace defender missed the Albania match but played the full 90 minutes in England’s win over Latvia at Wembley.

Marc Guehi acknowledges he must work “a lot harder” to secure his place in England’s defense under Thomas Tuchel.

The Crystal Palace defender had been a regular starter for the Three Lions, featuring in every Euro 2024 match except for one due to suspension and playing in four of six Nations League games last autumn. However, he was surprisingly left out of Tuchel’s first match in charge against Albania, with the new manager favoring Ezri Konsa and debutant Dan Burn in central defense.

Guehi returned to the starting lineup alongside Konsa for England’s 3-0 victory over Latvia at Wembley. While the opposition was weaker, the 24-year-old vowed to use his omission as motivation to prove his importance to Tuchel.

“It’s part of football,” Guehi said. “Obviously disappointed, but we’ve got a lot of good centre-backs. Dan has been doing extremely well at Newcastle, Ezri has been playing well. Levi [Colwill] obviously didn’t get on. It just means I need to work a lot harder to make sure the manager sees me in his plans. Not pressure, just motivation.”

Reflecting on his performance alongside Konsa, Guehi said: “Yeah, good. I’ve got a good relationship with him—good communication—and I’ve played with him before.”

He also praised Tuchel’s intensity and approach to training, highlighting the new manager’s influence.

“He [Tuchel] is almost one of the players, one of the lads when he’s amongst us. But when it’s time to work, it’s time to work, and he’s very intense.”
