Leicester’s recruitment team has a busy period ahead, with the club in need of a top forward. Both Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka have struggled to find the net, and with Vardy’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Daka does not appear to be the long-term solution.

This makes Tomoyuki Doi’s arrival for a trial particularly intriguing. The 27-year-old forward recently left Brøndby, where he was also on trial, to test himself at Leicester instead.

So, who is Tomoyuki Doi? Currently under contract with Singapore’s Geylang International, he has been in prolific form, scoring an astonishing 38 goals in 24 appearances. Before that, he netted 19 goals in 21 games for Hougang United, another Singaporean club. His goal-scoring exploits make him the top scorer in world football at the moment, though questions remain about the level of competition he has faced.

Doi had a brief stint in Japan’s second tier with Fujieda in 2022-23 and also played in Albania. However, his performances there were less remarkable.

Now, Leicester will assess whether he can perform at a higher level, as he is tested alongside their first-team squad in the coming weeks.

Leicester must be smart in their summer recruitment, avoiding unnecessary spending on fringe players. They need to be certain that any new signing can truly make an impact.

Doi’s trial is certainly worth exploring, but his struggles in Japan and Albania, along with his age, raise concerns. Whether he can make the step up remains to be seen, and Leicester will soon determine if he is the right fit.
