England U21s suffered a thrilling 5-3 defeat to France in a friendly at the Stade du Moustoir, with Liam Delap scoring but Omari Hutchinson seeing red late in the game.
Fast Start and Early Drama
England took the lead within 90 seconds as Delap’s header from a corner found Jaden Philogene, whose touch set up James McAtee to smash home. However, France responded with two quick goals to lead 2-1 by the seventh minute. Philogene came close to equalizing, hitting the post in the 17th minute after a strong run and shot.
Back-and-Forth Action
France extended their lead to 3-1 in the 34th minute, but England pulled one back four minutes later. Philogene’s blocked shot led to McAtee nodding the ball back for Harvey Elliott to tap in. Hugo Ekitike completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute, making it 4-2, before Delap headed home in the 61st minute after McAtee’s chip hit the post.
Hutchinson’s Red Card
Elliott missed a penalty in the 65th minute, and France sealed the win with a fifth goal in the 76th. Hutchinson, who came on for his third U21s cap, was sent off in the 85th minute for a high challenge on Thierno Barry, despite appearing to try to pull out of the tackle.
