Leipzig’s Henrichs Focuses on ‘Small Goals’ in Injury Comeback
RB Leipzig and Germany defender Benjamin Henrichs is taking his recovery one step at a time after suffering a devastating Achilles injury during a match against Bayern Munich in December. The 28-year-old, who had never experienced a major injury before, described hearing a “big bang” in his calf before collapsing on the pitch in front of 75,000 fans at Munich’s Allianz Arena.
Henrichs, who is unlikely to play for nearly a year, is now focused on achievable milestones rather than long-term goals like the 2026 World Cup. “You have to set small goals,” he said. “First, it was starting rehab, then getting rid of the boot, and now it’s walking without crutches.”
The injury has left him dependent on his girlfriend for daily tasks, but Henrichs remains optimistic. “The long-term goal is to be back on the pitch and part of the World Cup team,” he added.
Drawing Inspiration from Others
Henrichs has found motivation in athletes like the late Kobe Bryant, who famously made free throws after tearing his Achilles. He has also connected with fellow players like Axel Witsel and Presnel Kimpembe, who have experienced similar injuries.
“Martin Terrier and I are kind of Achilles besties now,” Henrichs joked, referring to the Leverkusen player who also suffered an Achilles rupture.
Life Beyond Football
During his recovery, Henrichs has been working on a documentary and cherishing time with loved ones. “Last month was my birthday, and it was the first in years I spent with my family,” he said. “It’s been a rare chance to focus on life outside football.”
Henrichs’ journey back to the pitch will be a challenging one, but his determination and focus on small victories offer hope for a successful comeback
