Marco Gabbiadini doesn’t hold back when criticizing Sunderland’s performances or calling out individual players.
If there was ever a time to criticize Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland side, it’s now. The Black Cats delivered arguably their worst performance of the season in a 3-0 defeat to Coventry City just before the March international break.
Sunderland looked poor both collectively and individually. Fans were particularly critical of captain Dan Neil, whose struggles highlighted the team’s need for a break. However, with several players away on international duty, it remains uncertain whether the squad will return refreshed and ready to go. Their next challenge is against Millwall at the Stadium of Light later in March.
Despite holding a 12-point cushion in the top six, Sunderland still have 24 points left to play for. Fans will be hoping this break sparks a turnaround, as strong form heading into the playoffs will be crucial if they secure a spot.
Marco Gabbiadini Criticizes Patrick Roberts
One player who has faced growing criticism is Patrick Roberts. The former Manchester City winger has struggled for consistency, managing just two goals and six assists in 37 Championship games. Many fans feel his contributions have been lacking throughout the season.
Le Bris, however, continues to select Roberts. Speaking on *Total Sport* after the Coventry loss, Sunderland legend Marco Gabbiadini questioned that decision, especially in a game that demanded physicality rather than technical finesse.
“It truly was an awful performance. They got exactly what they deserved,” Gabbiadini said. “I was quite shocked at the substitutions – cannot believe how many minutes Roberts played. He was absolutely pointless being out there. It was a game about being first to the ball, about getting the first touch.”
Roberts Responds to the Criticism
The debate around Roberts continues. While he has undeniable technical ability, his lack of end product remains a concern. Gabbiadini’s comments suggest that Le Bris may not be using the 28-year-old effectively.
Roberts’ skillset can be dangerous in certain matches, but in more physical encounters—like the one against Coventry—Le Bris may need to be more ruthless in his team selection.
Speaking after the defeat, Roberts admitted his disappointment, saying, “I thought today we lacked an awful lot. It’s something a lot of us are embarrassed about. To come here we knew it would be a tough place anyway, but to give two goals like that is unacceptable.”
Sunderland and Roberts both have a lot to prove after the break. Whether this two-week pause will help them reset remains to be seen.
