Steelers add towering ex-Patriots defensive tackle

The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding veteran defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale, formerly of the New England Patriots. Ekuale, a seven-year NFL veteran, had been with the Patriots since 2021 and started 16 games last season due to a string of injuries on the team.

Capable of playing multiple positions across the defensive front, Ekuale has lined up anywhere from nose tackle to five-technique. For the Steelers, he is expected to play between the three-technique and five-technique roles.

At 31, Ekuale is coming off his most productive season, recording 52 tackles, one sack, 16 pressures, and 26 run stops—numbers comparable to or better than those of former Steelers defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi.

Born in Samoa, Ekuale played college football at Washington State before spending his early NFL years with the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars. Throughout his career, he has tallied six sacks, primarily serving as a key rotational player.

With the Steelers, he is expected to fill a similar role, likely replacing Isaiahh Loudermilk while providing depth and insurance following Ogunjobi’s departure.
