The 2025 free agency period is underway, and while some teams are making key moves, the New England Patriots still have work to do, particularly in securing a No. 1 wide receiver. Several promising options were on the market, but the Patriots were unable to land their top targets. Chris Godwin re-signed with the Buccaneers, Davante Adams joined the Rams, and the Seahawks traded DK Metcalf to the Steelers.
There was still hope for the Patriots to land Tee Higgins, but recent developments have made that less likely. The Cincinnati Bengals tagged Higgins for the second consecutive year, potentially leaving the door open for a tag-and-trade deal. However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Bengals are making significant progress on a major contract extension for Higgins, which could be finalized soon.

If Higgins signs the extension, it would effectively end the Patriots’ hopes of acquiring him. With other top wide receivers off the market, New England will now turn its attention to the 2025 NFL Draft. Missouri’s Luther Burden III, Texas’ Matthew Golden, and Arizona’s Tetairoa McMillan are among the best draft prospects. The Patriots, holding the No. 4 overall pick, could still have a shot at one of these wideouts.
