Alan Shearer Missing from Rest Is Football as Newcastle’s Trophy Celebrations Continue

Newcastle United ended their 70-year trophy drought on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, and Alan Shearer was at the heart of the celebrations.

Alan Shearer was noticeably absent from the latest episode of *The Rest Is Football* podcast, and there was a good reason for it. The Newcastle United legend had more important matters to attend to at Wembley, where he witnessed his beloved Magpies end a 70-year trophy drought. A thrilling 2-1 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final secured a historic victory for Eddie Howe’s side, with Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scoring the pivotal goals. Federico Chiesa’s late strike for Liverpool was inconsequential as Newcastle finally etched their name onto silverware.

Shearer was seen celebrating passionately in the stands at the final whistle, and according to Gary Lineker, the celebrations didn’t stop there. Shearer spent much of the night enjoying the moment with the squad, sharing in the joy with both players and fans. Lineker joked, “Alan’s had an amazing day at Wembley. Needless to say, he isn’t going to make the pod as we’re recording this on Sunday evening.”

Despite having only 34 percent possession, Newcastle were the better team from start to finish. They created more chances and even had a second-half goal disallowed for offside.

In a poetic twist, it was lifelong Newcastle supporter Burn who opened the scoring with a thunderous header just before halftime. After the match, Liverpool manager Arne Slot commented on Burn’s impressive goal, saying he had never seen such a powerful header from that distance.

Isak extended Newcastle’s lead early in the second half, and though Liverpool applied pressure, it wasn’t until the 94th minute that Chiesa pulled one back.

The final moments were tense for the Newcastle faithful, but the match ended in jubilation when the referee’s whistle confirmed the victory.

This historic win not only ended seven decades of waiting but also broke a long-standing curse, delivering a cup final triumph after five previous defeats. Shearer, who had suffered heartbreak in FA Cup finals against Arsenal and Manchester United, could finally bask in the glory of his boyhood club lifting a trophy.
