Danny Ings’ Southampton return is a recurring rumor every transfer window, and this summer is no exception.
Southampton Eye Danny Ings Return for Promotion Push
Givemesport.com reports that Southampton are looking to bring back Danny Ings to boost their promotion hopes next season.
This isn’t the first time Ings has been linked with a return to St Mary’s—since his departure to Aston Villa in 2021, the rumor has resurfaced almost every transfer window. Back then, he was at the peak of his career, with Saints receiving around £30 million for the move, part of which went to Liverpool.
However, what Ings envisioned as a career-defining transfer quickly soured. His time at Villa never truly clicked, though he managed 13 goals in 48 appearances. After just 17 months, the club decided to move him on, recouping only half their original investment when West Ham paid £15 million.
At West Ham, things went from bad to worse. Over two years, he has started just 11 Premier League games, coming off the bench 41 times and scoring only four goals. Despite staying fit, he has rarely been picked, while rumors of interest from several clubs—including Southampton—have circulated. However, his high wages at the London Stadium made a move difficult.
Now, with his contract expiring this summer, Ings’ agent appears to be working behind the scenes. Reports suggest Saints attempted to sign him last year but couldn’t finalize a deal.
Turning 33 in July, Ings could still have plenty to offer. His limited game time in recent seasons may even leave him in better physical condition than most players his age. Over the past decade, he has made just 128 Premier League starts, nearly half of them with Southampton.
If Saints can seal the deal, bringing Ings back could prove to be a smart move for their Premier League ambitions.
