Matt O’Riley faces new challenges at Brighton

Matt O’Riley’s time at Brighton & Hove Albion has been anything but smooth.

The former Celtic midfielder arrived on the south coast in a record-breaking transfer last summer, but he has yet to make a significant impact.

His Brighton debut was cut short by injury just six minutes in, and since then, he has managed only one goal and one assist in 14 appearances.

O’Riley missed Brighton’s FA Cup fifth-round win over Newcastle, with manager Fabian Hurzeler revealing his ongoing struggles: “Matt O’Riley is over his illness, but we have to take care of his knee issue. We have to see if he can train,” he told the BBC.

At Celtic, O’Riley was a standout performer, scoring 19 goals and providing 18 assists in 49 games last season. He was named both the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

Brighton has been a breeding ground for rising stars, but O’Riley has yet to find his rhythm in his new surroundings. It remains uncertain when he will return from his latest setback.
