Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly pushing for the club to sign Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, described as an “unbelievable” talent, in a deal that could exceed £50 million. This comes as Chelsea’s current goalkeeping options, Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen, have struggled with costly errors this season. Sanchez, in particular, has made five mistakes leading to goals, the joint-highest in the Premier League, while Jorgensen has also faltered, including a poor performance against Brighton.
Verbruggen, 22, has impressed at Brighton this season, making 25 Premier League appearances and earning praise from manager Fabian Hurzeler, who called him a “role model” for his maturity and professionalism. However, the Dutch goalkeeper has also been error-prone, with four mistakes leading to goals, just one fewer than Sanchez. Despite this, Maresca sees Verbruggen as a potential first-choice option for Chelsea, though Brighton’s £50 million valuation and interest from Manchester United could complicate the deal.
Chelsea are also considering other goalkeeping targets, such as Diogo Costa and Caoimhin Kelleher, and are expected to sell at least one of their current keepers—Sanchez, Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, or Mike Penders—this summer. While Verbruggen’s potential is clear, his error record suggests Chelsea should proceed with caution in their pursuit.
