Jean-Philippe Mateta Provides Update After Horror Injury in FA Cup Clash
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has shared an update following a terrifying challenge during their FA Cup fifth-round match against Millwall. The incident occurred just eight minutes into the game when Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts was shown a red card for a reckless high-footed challenge on Mateta. VAR intervened, prompting referee Michael Oliver to dismiss Roberts for the dangerous follow-through kick.
Mateta required seven minutes of on-pitch treatment and was given oxygen before being stretchered off to applause from the Selhurst Park crowd. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Taking to Instagram, Mateta reassured fans, writing,
“Thank you all for your kind messages. I’m doing well. I hope to be back very soon. And stronger than ever. Well done guys for the great job today. I love you. JP.”
At halftime, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish expressed his shock and concern over the incident, confirming that Mateta had suffered a deep gash behind his ear and a head injury. Parish described the challenge as “the most reckless” he had ever seen, stating, “In all the time I’ve watched football, I’ve never seen a challenge like it. He’s endangering a fellow professional—and maybe even his life with a challenge like that.”
Mateta’s potential absence could be a major blow for Palace, as the French striker has been in exceptional form, scoring four goals in his last four Premier League appearances and totaling 12 goals this season. This follows his impressive 16-goal campaign last year, marking the best spell of his career at the club.
The Eagles will hope for a swift recovery for their star forward as they continue their push in both the Premier League and FA Cup. Fans and teammates alike will be eagerly awaiting his return to the pitch.
