Former Premier League midfielder Andy Reid has urged Stoke City to give Mark Robins time to shape the team his way.
Stoke City appointed Mark Robins earlier this winter as their new manager, replacing Narcis Pelach. The former Coventry City boss signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Bet365 Stadium and has managed three wins in his first 11 matches.
Former Charlton and Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid believes Stoke should give Robins the time and support he needs to build a stable team. Speaking on BBC’s Football Daily podcast, Reid said, “They need to give Mark Robins the time and backing to bring in players. He knows players and how to develop them. I do wonder what the strategy will be at Stoke because it’s been so bitty.”
He pointed out Stoke’s constant managerial changes, adding, “Different managers bring in a few players, then the next manager comes in and doesn’t like those players, and the cycle begins again. They haven’t been able to get it right.”
Reid suggested that the club commit to Robins for at least the rest of this season and the next before making any major decisions. “Stoke need that stability. I don’t think he needs loads of money—he’s shown he can spot a player and make them better.”
Stoke City’s Current Struggles
The Potters recently suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Middlesbrough, leaving them 20th in the Championship, just five points above the relegation zone. Their lack of consistency keeps them at risk of dropping into League One, despite a small cushion above Plymouth, Derby, and Luton.
Robins took charge in January following Pelach’s difficult stint and has experienced mixed results so far. Before joining Stoke, he was surprisingly dismissed by Coventry after seven years in charge. With previous managerial spells at Rotherham and Huddersfield, he brings significant Football League experience.
What’s Next?
Stoke City will host Watford this weekend, facing a Hornets side that has won their last two matches. Robins will be looking for a crucial victory to help steer his team further away from the drop zone.
