Southampton passed on a £3m deal for a ‘super’ talent—now he’s thriving at Tottenham after a £21m move!

Southampton had a strong campaign in the 2019/20 season.

Southampton wrapped up the 2019/20 season in 11th place in the Premier League, with Danny Ings leading the charge by scoring 25 goals across all competitions. The campaign also featured memorable victories over Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester City under Ralph Hasenhüttl.

However, one decision made at the end of that season now appears to have been a costly mistake.

Southampton Passed on a £3m Deal for Kevin Danso
Kevin Danso is now thriving in the Premier League—but not with Southampton.

The Austrian defender spent the 2019/20 season on loan at St. Mary’s from Augsburg, but with Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens ahead of him in the pecking order, Hasenhüttl handed him just ten appearances. Despite having the option to sign him permanently for just £3m, Southampton opted against it.

Danso returned to Germany for another loan spell at Fortuna Düsseldorf before earning a move to RC Lens. After impressing in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, he caught the attention of Tottenham, who paid £21m to bring him in during the most recent transfer window.

Now, as Southampton struggle at the bottom of the Premier League with a leaky defense that has conceded 65 goals in 27 games, manager Ivan Jurić would surely love to have a player like Danso—who has quickly won over Ange Postecoglou at Spurs.

Wolves Also Missed Out on Danso
It’s not just Southampton who may regret missing out—Wolves were also in the race for Danso but saw Tottenham swoop in at the last moment.

Just before the transfer deadline on February 3rd, Spurs hijacked Wolves’ move for the Austrian, leaving those at Molineux frustrated. Wolves ended up signing Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Agbadou instead, but with Danso now excelling in North London, they may be left wondering what could have been.
