According to recently made public CCTV footage, a welder was crushed in 2022 while working at a shipyard in Sunderland.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said on Tuesday, 25 February, that David Vinsome, 37, of North Shields, suffered internal injuries and multiple rib fractures as a result of the incident at Pallion Shipyard.
Between a manufacturing table and an excavation bucket, he was crushed.
According to HSE, the company failed to develop a safe system of work for the lifting activity, which resulted in a breakdown of communication between the several operators involved, and failed to guarantee that the lifting activity was properly planned by a competent person or carried out in a safe manner.
Sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 were violated by Midland Steel Traders Ltd., located at Portobello Ind Est., Shadon Way, Chester le Street. On February 13, 2025, the company was fined £100,000 and ordered to pay £4,916 in costs at Newcastle Magistrates Court.
