Leeds United’s pursuit of Southampton striker gets clearer.

Leeds United may reignite their summer pursuit of Southampton’s Cameron Archer after a failed winter move.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Leeds United are considering a renewed pursuit of Southampton’s Cameron Archer in the summer after missing out on him in January.

Despite not making any mid-season signings, Leeds remain on track for promotion. They currently top the league ahead of a crucial clash with second-placed Sheffield United, aiming to extend their unbeaten run to 16 matches.

Leeds were keen on Archer despite Joel Piroe’s impressive form, with the Dutchman sitting as the Championship’s second-highest scorer. Although a winter move didn’t materialize, the Whites could return for Archer if circumstances align.

Leeds Could Revive Interest in Archer

Leeds made a late move for Archer, who joined Southampton last summer for £15 million from Aston Villa. Reports suggest he was their top January target, but Southampton, battling relegation, refused to sell.

However, if Leeds secure promotion and Southampton drop to the Championship, a summer transfer could become viable. The Saints are bottom of the Premier League, 13 points from safety with just 12 games left.

Journalist Ben Jacobs told GIVEMESPORT:

> “Cameron Archer was Leeds’ number one target as far as the striker was concerned, and it was no failing on the part of Leeds.

> “It was just down to the fact that Southampton were reluctant to sell. Leeds tried until the end, but Southampton’s position didn’t change.

> “With Southampton likely to go down and Leeds on track to come up, I expect Leeds to revisit the Archer deal over the summer. Archer is keen on the move, and Leeds value his versatility across the front line.”

Concerns Over Archer’s Premier League Form**

While signing Archer in January would have bolstered Leeds’ promotion push, his struggles in the top flight raise concerns. The 23-year-old has excelled in the Championship during loan spells with Preston and Middlesbrough but has yet to replicate that success at Premier League level.

His stint with Sheffield United last season yielded just four goals in 29 games, and he has managed only two goals this term. While playing for struggling teams has affected his output, his ability to perform in the Premier League remains uncertain.

Leeds could offer better service at Elland Road, but if promoted, they may prefer to target a more proven top-flight striker instead of gambling on Archer’s potential.
