I’m leaving the Memphis Tigers Basketball organization as a coach due to my parents’ actions towards me and the need for personal growth and healing. This decision isn’t easy for me, as I have poured my heart and soul into this program and have cherished the relationships formed with the players, staff, and the community. However, the weight of my family situation has influenced my ability to focus entirely on my role as a coach.

Coaching has always been more than just a profession for me; it has been a passion and a calling. The Memphis Tigers organization is not just a team; it’s a family. I have witnessed remarkable talent and unyielding determination in these young athletes, and I have loved every moment of guiding them through their struggles and triumphs on the court. Together, we celebrated exhilarating victories and navigated the tough lessons that come with losses. My intention has always been to foster a positive environment where the players can thrive, both as athletes and as individuals. But, as they say, you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Unfortunately, my family dynamics have reached a point where their unresolved issues have begun to seep into every aspect of my life, including my coaching career. My parents’ behavior towards me, characterized by emotional neglect and criticism, has taken a toll on my mental health and my ability to lead effectively. In some cases, their actions have left me feeling unsupported and diminished, undermining my capacity to inspire my players fully. As I engaged with these bright young minds, I came to realize that I was not in a position to motivate others when I was grappling with my own feelings of inadequacy and disappointment.

Taking this step to leave the Memphis Tigers organization is a personal form of self-care—a recognition that I need space to address these family issues and focus on my healing journey. It is essential to me that I cultivate my own sense of well-being before continuing to guide future generations of athletes. Mental health is paramount, especially in high-pressure environments like sports, and I believe it is crucial for coaches to embody the resilience and strength that they wish to impart to their players.

This decision has not come without grief. I feel an immense sense of loss in leaving colleagues and players that I have grown so close to over the years. However, I know that by prioritizing my well-being, I can eventually return to coaching with renewed energy and perspective. My hope is that I can turn this challenging period into an opportunity for growth that not only benefits me but also sets an example for my players about the importance of mental health and self-advocacy.

To the Memphis Tigers Basketball organization, I express my deepest gratitude. Thank you for allowing me to be part of something so special. I hope to return one day, with fresh insights and stories of resilience to share. Until then, I will work diligently to ensure that my personal narrative becomes one of triumph over adversity—a journey that, I hope, can inspire others to confront their own challenges head-on.
